Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS/CRPS) is a chronic pain disorder involving the sympathetic nervous system. While the precipitating mechanism of the signs and symptoms characteristic of RSDS has not been defined, abnormalities of the sympathetic nervous system have been strongly implicated. More often than not, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome ( RSDS) develops after a traumatic injury. RSDS/CRPS can also be a complication of surgery, infection, casting or splinting and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Cervical Collars; The Good, the Bad and The Ugly
Author: Richard H. Adler

Immobilization collars are a "good" and integral part of treatment for people with suspected or confirmed fractures of their cervical spine to prevent neurologic damage during transportation from the traumatic injury scene for treatment. These collars can also provide an important reminder to the injured person of their injuries to prevent additional injury from unprotected or rapid movements of the neck during times of distraction while at home, at work or in a car.

Apportionment of Injuries
Author: Richard H. Adler

The phrase "preexisting condition" often causes some confusion for health care providers when they are asked to apportion a percentage of a patient's condition between a preexisting condition and a new trauma. The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines on when a provider needs to apportion injuries and how to do so.

Lack of Correlation Between Degenerative Changes in the Cervical Spine and Pain and Disability
Author: Richard H. Adler

|
Insurers and their medical examiners often attempt to link pre traumatic spinal degeneration and patient symptoms after a traumatic injury as a way to deflect their responsibility for the injuries following an automobile, bicycle, trip and fall or pedestrian trauma. Recently, however, a study published in Spine, "A Cross-Sectional Study Correlating Degeneration of the Cervical Spine with Disability and Pain in United Kingdom Patients,"1 refuted that connection.

Author: Panjabe

A new hypothesis, based upon the concept that subfailure injuries of ligaments (spinalligaments, disc annulus and facet capsules) may cause chronic back pain due tomuscle control dysfunction, is presented.
